2013 was a historic year as the rollout of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) changed the entire landscape of American health care.
It meant that many people in Illinois would be accessing health insurance for the first time and they had a lot to learn about how to take advantage of the new law.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois recognized the need for ACA education early on and created Be Covered Illinois.
The Be Covered campaign is a grassroots effort that provides easy-to-understand information, in both English and Spanish, on the Affordable Care Act, as well as practical tools and tips on how to sign up for coverage.
To best spread that information to those who need it the most, we enlisted community partners who are already trusted messengers in areas with high numbers of the uninsured.
One highlight of the campaign was the Be Covered Care Fair held in Chicago in October. The fair drew more than 5,200 people, featured 36 community resource organizations, offered 7 types of medical services and gave away 2,000 bags of free food.
