Access to Health Care
Local Initiatives Support Corporation Chicago (LISC Chicago)
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) is helping to fund a program aimed at closing the gap between the high number of Chicago Public School families who qualify for state-run children’s health insurance and other safety net benefits, but are not taking advantage of them. It’s estimated that 200,000 children may be falling through the cracks.
BCBSIL supports an innovative partnership between the Mayor’s Office of the City of Chicago, Chicago Department of Public Health, Chicago Public Schools, LISC Chicago and its community-based organization network. The program is bringing information about benefits such as All Kids Healthcare, Medicaid and SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program formerly known as Food Stamps) right to the neighborhoods where eligible families live, work and play.
LISC Chicago is also helping spread information about the Affordable Care Act (ACA), often going door-to-door, to let people know about their options with the ACA and to refer them to other partners who can help them enroll with an insurance provider. To date, they have come in contact with 14,086 people and held 248 outreach and enrollment events.
