Disease Prevention and Management
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) committed heart and “sole” to the 2013 Metro Chicago Heart Walk.
Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of men, women and children every 38 seconds. It defies stereotypes of who are “sick people.” It reaches into our cities, our neighborhoods and all-too-often even our homes.
For years, BCBSIL employees have been actively leading teams of walkers who participate in the American Heart Association’s Metro Chicago Heart Walk – an annual event which aims to raise funds for research, education and advocacy efforts.
In 2013, while teams of employees continued their own fundraising, BCBSIL as a company went bigger – we stepped up as one of the major sponsors, giving $125,000 to the Heart Walk and having BCBSIL Chief Medical Officer, Opella Ernest, M.D., serve as the Corporate Challenge Chair. At four sites around Chicagoland, 360 BCBSIL employees walked 1 and 3 mile routes, raising an additional $43,585.
